Animals
In these paintings, animals act as stand-ins for the human self. Each figure represents a distinct aspect of our inner lives—qualities such as courage or fear, generosity or selfishness, attentiveness or avoidance. At times an animal embodies a single emotion: the dog as unconditional love, the chicken as selfishness and restlessness, the jackrabbit as a careful listener who remains elusive. A school of fish appears as a metaphor for navigating one’s place in the world, moving collectively through uncertainty while seeking direction and belonging. Through these animal surrogates, the work reflects the complexity of being human, using familiar forms to explore our shifting emotional states and inner contradictions.
